Hot weather dampens John Lewis’ performance
The hot weather that settled over the UK last week resulted in a slowdown in sales at John Lewis, with Electricals & Home technology the only directorate producing positive figures.
Sales declined 4.3% to £73.3m against a strong result in the same week last year.
Electricals & Home technology finished the week up 6.4% year on year. Unsurprisingly, it was home cooling products such as fans and air conditioning units that led the category, up by over 3000%.
The retailer said the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer enjoyed its biggest week since launch, and the Pokémon GO phenomenon also boosted the category, with sales of portable mobile chargers up 86%.
Financial year-to-date sales (up to week 25) of Electricals & Home technology goods at John Lewis were up 8.3% in total, according to figures released today by the retailer.
