Consumer confidence negative but steady
Consumer confidence remained stable in March, with increases in the 12-month outlook for the general economy, personal finances and the savings index offsetting a four-point drop in the major purchase index – the measure reflecting consumers’ appetite for spending on big-ticket items.
GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index remained at -13, a score which in the prior month was described by the research analyst as “frankly amazing”.
Joe Staton, Client Strategy Director at GfK, noted that confidence has remained negative but fairly stable since the 2016 EU Referendum, against a backdrop of stable inflation and a robust labour market, where wages continue to grow more quickly than prices.
