Electricals help boost November retail sales
November retail sales received a welcome lift as seasonal discounts encouraged spending.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the month-on-month quantity bought at retail increased by 1.1%, with household goods stores showing growth of 2.9%.
Retailers’ feedback suggested that Black Friday events contributed to the monthly increase in household goods stores, with electrical appliances making the largest contribution to growth, up 8.6%.
The ONS said total average store prices increased by 3.1% compared with the same period last year. Prices rose across all store types.
The amount spent online accounted for 17.0% of all retail spending, excluding automotive fuel, compared with 16.1% in November 2016.
The figures covered the period from 29 October to 25 November.
