iRobot unveils cloud-connected Roomba 980
The iRobot Roomba 980 is the first product in the Roomba range of robotic vacuum cleaners to be connected to the cloud, allowing consumers to control it from iRobot’s new ‘Home’ app so they can set the appliance to work from any location and manage its schedule too.
vSLAM (visual simultaneous localisation and mapping) sits at the heart of the iRobot’s new iAdapt 2.0 Navigation with Visual Localization technology, so the Roomba 980 is able to avoid obstacles and intelligently map floors in the home. The appliance also knows exactly how far it goes in any direction as it incorporates a visual sensor and a floor-tracking sensor.
“It can create an actual map of the home,” said iRobot co-founder and chief executive Colin Angle. “This is important because our goal is not to clean a part of your home, our goal is to clean your entire home.
“The Roomba 980 is probably the most significant launch from iRobot since the original Roomba hit floors in 2002,” he added.
This machine can clean for a full two hours, and if the job is not finished it will return to its base to recharge before completing the task.
The Roomba 980 launched in the United States and Canada last week and will be available in the UK in the first quarter of 2016.
Commenting on its forthcoming arrival, Bo Simonsen, market manager for exclusive distributor Witt UK & Ireland, said: “With more than a decade of cleaning homes around the world, iRobot understands consumer needs in Europe and the wide range of challenges associated with robotic floor care – iRobot has sold more than 13 million robotic vacuum cleaners in the last 10 years and is committed to remaining the brand leader.
“I would encourage retailers to look at iRobot Roomba 980 – the smartest robot.”
Simonsen added that there are a number of display options available for retailers to best show the iRobot range in store.
