No let-up in sales of appliances, despite price increases

Sales of household appliances are expected to reach $362 billion in 2021, an increase of 8% on last year, after the market for both small and large goods recorded an excellent first half.

According to researcher GfK, the predicted rise would mark a new record in global sales volumes.

Demand in the first half of 2021 was impressive. Sales of small appliances rose 21% and large appliances 31% compared to the same period last year, which was impacted by lockdowns.

Western Europe saw growth up by 32% in large goods, while Europe logged above-average growth of 27% for small appliances.

Growing demand, however, is causing price increases, said GfK. Increases which are exacerbated by sharp rises in raw material and logistics costs.

Norbert Herzog, GfK expert for household appliances, said: “A price increase of 23% in the second quarter confirms the upward price trend that has already been observed since the third quarter of 2020.”

While this could slow demand in the second half of the year, Herzog is confident of GfK’s predicted growth. “Regardless,” he said, “we expect the market for home appliances to grow by 8% overall in 2021, setting a new record in global sales volume.”
