One in two smart HDTVs sold is Freeview Play-enabled
Subscription-free TV service Freeview has announced that Freeview Play TVs account for more than half of all smart HDTV sales in the UK.
Freeview Play was launched less than two years ago to provide a subscription-free combination of live, catch-up and on-demand content and is backed by more than 20 leading TV brands.
Dan Hastings Category Director for Consumer Electronics at Dixons Carphone described the service as “a credible alternative to pay TV.”
Figures from GfK show that 55% of smart HDTVs sold in June this year were Freeview Play-enabled, a rise of 20% since January, and 1.5 million devices have been sold since launch.
Freeview Managing Director Guy North said: “Freeview Play is fast becoming the smart choice for UK consumers. I’d like to thank all our partners who have helped us reach this milestone. It’s a remarkable achievement.”
