ONS: January retail sales show strong growth
Figures released today by the Office for National Statistics show that retail sales volumes grew for the 33rd consecutive month in January.
Estimates put growth at 5.2% compared to January 2015 and 2.3% compared to December 2015.
Average store prices (including petrol stations) fell by 2.6% year on year, representing the 19th consecutive month of price falls.
The figures also show the amount spent by consumers rose 2.4% compared to January 2015 and 2.3% on December.
Figures released by the BRC last week showed total sales growth up 3.3% on the back of big-ticket purchases.
According to the BRC-KPMG retail sales monitor, this was the best growth since September last year, and the result was firmly ahead of the 3-month average of 1.6% and the 12-month average of 1.9%.
The ONS today said that online sales also increased in January, rising 10.4% year on year and up 2.7% on December.
