Retail footfall rises as consumers prepare for lockdown easing

Retail footfall rose 6.6% last week, boosted in particular by the number of shoppers visiting retail parks.

The latest data from retail specialist Springboard show footfall in high streets and shopping centres up 6.6% and 4% respectively, compared to the previous week, while visits to retail parks increased 9%, “most likely due to shoppers upgrading their gardens in advance of the relaxation of restrictions this week,” said Diane Wehrle, insights director at Springboard.

In comparison to the same week in 2020, footfall was 68.1% higher, but remained 57.3% lower than in the same week in 2019.

Wehrle added that footfall has now risen in eight of the past nine weeks.
