Wettest February on record a blow to non-food footfall

Average weekly footfall in non-food stores fell to a record low last month, after storms Ciara, Dennis and Jorge brought about the wettest February on record. 

According to retail insights company Ipsos Retail Performance, which monitors footfall in non-food outlets, shopper numbers were down 14.2% year-on-year and 23.0% lower than in January.

All areas of the UK were affected, with the hardest hit stores being in Northern England (-16.8% year-on-year) and the Midlands (-16.3% year-on-year). 

SW England and Wales recorded the lowest decline, down 7% year-on-year.

Ipsos estimates a 6.3% month-on-month fall in shopper numbers for March, although concedes that it is impossible to predict the spread and response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Treat the forecast as optimistic,” the company said.
