Will this little device put an end to electrical appliance fires?

A device which aims to make electrical appliance fires a thing of the past has received this year’s Electrical Safety First – Safety Innovation Award.

Dubbed “the smallest fire extinguisher in the world”, the E-Bulb from German company JOB can extinguish fires inside an appliance, before they become visible and cause damage to people and buildings.

JOB developed the E-Bulb, technically classified as a Circuit Interrupter with Fire Extinguishing Agent (CIFEA), based on extensive expertise in thermally activated glass bulbs used in sprinkler systems.

The company says the device is comparable to the AquaStop leak protection in washing machines. It is part of the FireStop system for electrical appliances which can put out fires before they spread and simultaneously interrupt the power supply.

The E-Bulb opens the door for electrical goods manufacturers to implement device-integrated fire protection to make appliances safer.

The device is already being used to protect Samsung media walls at Frankfurt Airport. The first consumer white goods to integrate the E-Bulb component will include the launch of fridges, coffee machines and dishwashers in the coming months.

The Award was presented at Electrical Safety First’s 12th annual product safety conference, a virtual affair this year hosted over two mornings. The event, entitled A Sustainable Future, highlighted how today’s products must not only be safe to use but also cyber-secure and sustainable.

Bodo Müller, JOB Group CEO and inventor of the E-Bulb, who attended the conference online to accept the award, said: “The E-Bulb is key to delivering our company vision of a world in which everyone is protected from the dangers of fire at any time. At a time of extreme uncertainty, this event has given us the opportunity to showcase the E-Bulb, and device-integrated fire protection, as the next logical step in fire safety standards.”

Müller added that the award is testament to the commitment to research and innovation of the whole JOB team and its partners.
